SARS vows to intensify criminal action against late tax payers

SARS will intensify criminal proceedings against tax offenders from October, it said on Thursday.

The revenue service is attempting to make sure taxpayers file their returns on time with the slogan “pay your taxes or pay the price”. It said that failure to submit returns within the relevant period would result in fines imposed, or even “criminal prosecution resulting in imprisonment”. Read the full article here.

Missing target

Earlier Fin24 reported that SARS missed its first-quarter tax revenue target by R13.1bn. If this trend continues, it would miss its overall target by an estimated R50bn in 2017.
